Net-Set v4.0 Help File
****************************
Hello here are some Tips, Help and quick guides for using Bogomip Dashboard
and the supplied Net app's etc.
Before We Go Any Further:-
--------------------------
Remember your ISP must use Dynamic IP Address assignment or net-set won't work.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General:-
1) READ ALL THE DOC's and GUIDES included with each app, print if possible.
2) Voyager and MUI need more than the standard 2mb of chip ram to function
well, especially when viewing JPEG's etc. I strongley advise upgrading your
ram, as once AmiTCP,MUI,Dos drivers, assigns and datatypes etc have taken
their chunk of your memory you won't have much left for web pages.
3) If you want faster serial conections get at least an 020 machine
(i.e. A1200) or accelerator. As you really need more ram anyway why not
get an 030 accelerator card as well for not much more than a std ram card.
4) To view inline GIF's and Jpeg's in Voyager you will need at least OS 3.0
because you need to use Datatypes.
5) To see the web pages in all their colourful glory you will need an AGA
chip set or third party graphics card as you need at least 256 colours
ECS only has 16.
6) Get a monitor (even an old basic RGB type) as reading web pages and ftp
and news listings (normally late at night as the Net is quicker then) on
your tv screen will give you headaches and eye strain as the screen is
blured and distorted.
Graphics:-
1) Install good fast Datatypes (i.e. ZGIF and jfif included in this suite).
2) If you use jfif go to the Workbench Prefs drawer and double click the jfif
prefs icon. Click Multiview in the lefthand menu and on the righthand one
choose 1:2 and HAM. This will make viewing JPG's faster and better in
Voyager as it uses Multiview which is somewhat slow.
3) If you get other Datatypes from say Aminet or coverdisks etc (WAV, PIC,
PCX etc) you can wiew a lot more thanks to OS 3.0's versatile design.
Connecting:- (Did you read the Net-Set_info.list ?)
1) If you get funny characters or long pauses with blank lines in the log on
window (normally after the phone numbers have finished appearing) you have
a bad connection (i.e. bad line your end or bad line ISP end).
Just press "Ctrl C" and then log on again.
If this keeps happening you have your modem speed too high.
You may have set it for an 030 CPU in User.prefs re-run it and choose
(B) for an 020 CPU (std A1200). If you have a standard 68000 CPU i.e. A500
try (B) but I don't know.
Remember even with an 030 Amiga some 14.4k modems can't handle this speed
I've used it with a Hayes Accura 14.4k with no problems.
2) You get <file name> not executable or something when you use log on or
log off. This happens if you use ED to edit the files and forget to check
that the files executable flag is set in the icon information window.
Just open the information window for the affending file and tick the
executable flag then save.
3) Can't connect what so ever. You probably have a hacked or replacement
serial.device and AmiTCP don't like it. All you can do is copy the one
of your workbench disk. I don't like the hacked ones as they are prone to
bugs and errors.
4) The Log On window says something like "can't open serial.device" or what
ever and closes down or your system crash's but your modem carrier detect
light etc stays on. Just turn off your modem power then reboot and turn your
modem on again, this will free the line and serial.device then just choose
Log On again. (this does not happen much, but best to know aye)
5) You start Log On and the window opens but gets as far as Initializing Modem
Waiting for OK then it just seems to stop and do dothing else.
This happens because the modem you are using does not support the standard
AT codes pre-set in AmiTCP-4.0/bin/netdial.rexx and the modem is telling it
so. If netdial.rexx can't get an OK from your modem it will not continue
because it thinks your modem is not working.
There is an icon in the AmiTCP-4.0/Help drawer which should cure this by
allowing you to enter your own settings called "Modem_Change".
Just click it and pick (C) Change and enter your settings where prompted.
Before you do this dig out your modem manual and read the Modem.help file
in the AmiTCP-4.0:Help drawer for further info on entering your own settings.
(US Robotics modem users you may need to set dip switches read Modem Help)
You choose (R) to restore the Default settings.
Connected:-
1) You get loads of errors when downloading files etc or keep getting cut off
from your ISP. You have your speed settings too high or too low.
Old Amigas (i.e. A500 etc) have dodgey serial ports and cheap modems are
just as bad. Try User.prefs again and choose another speed.
Tip if you have a 28.8k modem but get loads of errors pick (B) from
User.prefs. (see point 1) Connecting above)
2) You've just got that graphic intensive web page loaded after about what
feels like a week and your computor screen goes blank:-
a) Your screen saver has cut in. So move your mouse dumbo.
b) Your wife/husband has just pulled out the fuse. If wife tell her that
you can get all the latest news/gossip on her Australian soaps or
download pictures of her screen idol. If husband refuse him dinner and
the other (thats the easy one).
3) You find your news and files are taking ages to download. I found that
the carrier detect screen blanker bit in "MCX" affects the serial.device.
Just disable it.
4) You can't view the Images in your web pages. Install the supplied ZGIF
Datatype AmiTCP-4.0:tools drawer. (it's the best one)
5) You can't view the .jpg files from the web pages. Install the supplied
jfif Datatype in the AmiTCP-4.0:tools drawer. Also see the Graphic files
section above. If the jfif installer won't work you might not have the
Commodore installer file installed. If so the file can be found on most
cover disks. Just copy it to your Workbench:C drawer.
6) Your system crashes/GURU and reboot (dodgey program, power cut etc).
On reboot you will still be connected to your ISP but the setup and details
your end have all gone AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!.
Don't worry I thought of that and added a little prog to get you back on
and up and running again. Just choose "Reconnect!" from the Dashboard menu.
"Easy aye"
Quick Get You Going Guides:-
Remember these are only get you going guides please read the doc's and guides
that come with each application in their drawers.
WWW:Voyager
-----------
Choose WWW/News from the Dashboard.
When Voyager first loads, the welcome page is loaded you can just click
on one of the links and of you go. Otherwise you can either enter a new
web address (i.e. http://www.Amiga.goodbits.com) or click one of the
second row of buttons for Amiga home page, lycos net searcher etc.
The button labeled HelpMe will bring up the Voyager help and home page
from a file on your disk (it's very good "SO READ IT").
To exit just choose Quit from the menu or click the close gadget, the
rest can be found from the HelpMe button.
FTP/Archie:AmFTP
----------------
Choose FTP/Archie from the Dashboard.
(Remember Aminet uses "LHA" to archive/unarchive it's files)
Before anything else make sure the directory listing on the left hand side
is set to a suitable drawer as this is where downloaded files will be sent.
Choose "Connect" then choose an FTP Site from the menu and when the selected
choose "connect to FTP server. When the site appears click the directorys
(links to directorys) of the type of files you are looking for.
Once in the directory just click the file you want and then click receive to
download it.
For Archie just choose "Archie" and enter the file you want to find.
When finished choose close where the connect was then the close gagdet.
LHA quick tip:
--------------
If you have never used lha to unarchive any thing before here is an easy tip.
Go to the drawer where the archive is and double click it.
The little execute window will come up with the name of your archive in it.
Place the cursor before the archive (i.e. far left) and type lha x then press
enter and the archive will be unarchived in the same drawer. (see below)
Archive in window: wobble.lha
So you type: lha x wobble.lha <---- And it looks like that.
^ ^
spaces
Make sure you have enough space in the drawer the archive is in.
NEWS:Voyager
------------
Choose WWW/News from the Dashboard.
Choose a NEWS Group from the Voyager welcome page and the latest subjects
will be read then displayed on your screen.
To read the contents of a subject just click it and it will be loaded
in the window. To download a subject choose "save as ASCII" from the
Menu Bar and it will be downloaded.
If you want more News groups than what are setup in the Bookmarks choose
the "News" button (bottom far right) and the complete News group list will
be downloaded and you can go through them choosing the ones you wish to
keep by selecting "Add To Bookmarks".
(This process can take a while as there are more than 10,000 groups)
All the best Amiga ones are already setup for you.
E-Mail:AirMail
--------------
Choose E-Mail from the Dashboard. (Read then click the Shareware screens)
Now you will see a small row of buttons appear on your workbench screen.
First before you can do anything else we have to tell it who we are and
where to get our mail from etc.
Choose config.setup from the menu and enter your details:-
All you should need to know is your E-Mail address. (see below)
Typical E-Mail address: aardvark@mail.ratnet.com (well maybe not)
^
POP Host: For these first two you normally use the bit-
SMTP Host: -after the @ in your E-Mail address. (i.e. mail.ratnet.com)
Domain: This is the same as your ISP's Host Name. (i.e. ratnet.com)
UserID: The bit before the @ in your E-Mail address. (i.e. aardvark)
Some ISP's use different than above so ask them if it does not work.
Ok now save it and choose OK in the following requester.
Click the one that looks like an envelope at the far right and enter your
password in the requester that comes up.
Now Choose ok and your mail box on your ISP will be searched, if you have
mail it will tell you and download it for you then choose in box from
the button strip and you can read/save/delete it.
To exit click the close gadget.
Well that's about all I can think of for now so just make sure you read all
the doc's and guides with each prog etc and you should be ok.
